Sask. NDP criticize new measures, claims government is dishonest with numbers

The Saskatchewan NDP say they are disappointed with the new COVID-19 measures introduced by the province Friday.

Health Critic Vicki Mowat says these new measures show the government doesn’t know what they’re doing.

“Most clearly to me, they’re not telling us what’s going on, they’re not bringing forward those modelling numbers,” said Mowat. “It is a complete lack of leadership, and if this is what we can expect from the new Health Minister, I think we’re in some trouble folks.”

Mowat went on to call the new measures ‘half measures’, adding the government hasn’t listened to the concerns of residents, who have been calling for more serious action.

NDP Leader Ryan Meili says the government should have talked to Alberta and Manitoba to help avoid Saskatchewan following in their paths.

“We know what path we’re on, and people were expecting something different today,” said Meili. “We’ve heard from doctors, pharmacists, nurses, and the general public that people are rightly concerned about the path that we’re on. Several days of hundreds of new cases added to our total, we’ve got more people in our ICUs, and we know that’s only going to climb in the days ahead.”

Meili says in addition to the lackluster measures, the fact that Premier Scott Moe didn’t announce them resonated with him.

“They’re hiding the numbers, they’re not telling us the truth about what’s really going on, and apparently they’re hiding the Premier as well,” said Meili. “On a day like this, when it’s so important that we actually have real measures, he didn’t want to come out and stand up beside this nothing of an announcement, he decided to stay away.”
