The Canadian Malt Barley Technical Centre has released a list of recommended malting barley varieties for spring seeding.
Managing director, Peter Watts, says each of the recommended malt barley varieties hold the most promise for farmers in terms of marketing their barley for malt.
He says all of the varieties have been pilot tested at the Technical Centre and exhibit very good malting and brewing characteristics.
This years list contains not only established varieties like CDC Copeland, AC Metcalfe and AAC Synergy, but promising newcomers as well.
He says up and coming varieties like AAC Connect, CDC Bow and CDC Fraser are among the next generation of high quality varieties that malt barley producers should consider for seeding in 2021.
He says these new varieties show significantly higher yields, better lodging resistance and improved disease packages to help Canadian malt barley stay competitive in the global market.
Farmers are advised to talk to their local malt barley buyers to determine which variety is best suited for their region.
Farmers are advised to have a production contract, particularly when growing new malting barley varieties.
