Man arrested after dangerous driving incident

A man is facing charges after a dangerous driving incident early Saturday morning.

At approximately 3:50 am, Regina Police responded to the area of 7th Avenue and Robinson Street. An officer had a suspicious vehicle in view that was being driven in a dangerous way. Patrol members were able to maintain view of the vehicle as it continued at a high rate of speed, disobeying several traffic laws.

The vehicle exited eastbound onto Ring Road and from Albert Street, where police used a spike belt in an attempt to stop the vehicle. The driver continued to evade police, however he became stuck in a field and the driver fled on foot,

After a short foot pursuit, the man was taken into custody. The man was found to have been wearing a protective vest and in possession of a knife.

A search of the vehicle resulted in the discovery of illicit drugs and several weapons including an expandable baton, a cross bow, and a machete.

32-year-old Anthony William Akan has been charged with the dangerous operation of a conveyance, 2 counts of possession of a weapon, and the possession of a scheduled substance for the purpose of trafficking.

Akan is scheduled to make his first court appearance on Monday.
