Evraz has begun laying off workers in their tubular division.
The steel mill confirmed Friday, that on November 13th, layoff notices were issued for around 50 people.
United Steelworkers Local 5890, the union representing the mill workers, was hoping that a contract for the TC Energy Pipeline would be given to the mill. Another company was eventually awarded the contract.
The union president says due to not being awarded the contract, there are no big orders left on the mill’s books. He adds he expects to see layoffs come every two weeks until January.
According to Evraz, there are still around 1,000 people working at the mill.
It is not known how many workers will be laid off.
