Following the court approval of the sale of Morris Industries to Rite Way Manufacturing last week comes word the Yorkton plant will close down at the end of the year.
Chamber of Commerce executive director Juanita Polegi says the news is disappointing.
“Morris Industries has been a cornerstone business in Yorkton for over seven decades, so to lose that is a blow to the city,” Polegi said. “The loss of so many high-paying jobs will have an impact on the local economy.”
Polegi says the move, which affects the plant only, will have a negative impact.
“It hurts the economy, and certainly many of these jobs were skilled labour,” Polegi said. “To lose those incomes will certainly have an impact.”
50 workers who were laid off earlier this year, and the 20 remaining employees, will be out of work.
Morris had operated a plant in Yorkton since 1949.
