Saskatoon police dog suffers serious injuries after being stabbed

A pursuit in Saskatoon on Wednesday morning resulted in one member of the canine unit being stabbed repeatedly.

“Oliver” , who has been with the Saskatoon Police Service for almost a year, suffered serious injuries after an incident that started when the police canine team spotted a suspicious truck in the Confederation Park area of the city around 10 a.m.  An attempt to stop the truck was made, but the driver took off at a high speed thus ending the chase.

The suspect vehicle was found shortly after on Highway 16 and the Dalmeny grid road.

The driver, a 32-year-old-man, was found in deep snow and during the arrest, Oliver was stabbed several times.

The man  arrested suffered some minor injuries and has been charged with a number of offences including a charge under Section 445 of the Criminal Code of Canada.

“Quanto’s Law” prohibits the killing or wounding of animals used to help law enforcement.

Oliver is recovering after undergoing surgery Wednesday afternoon.
