CFL Free Agency updates

2:35 pm – Riders announce the singings of Canadian DB Godfrey Onyeka and DB Lorenzo Jerome.

Onyeka played two seasons with Edmonton. He started five games at field cornerback in the 2019 season, including both playoff games.

Jerome played for the Stampeders in 2019. He made 11 tackles and 6 special teams tackles

2:05 pm – Riders confirm the signings of LB Jordan Herdman-Reed and LB Justin Herdman-Reed.

The 26-year-old twins were both taken in the 7th round of the 2017 CFL Draft.

This will be the first time they play together since their university days at Simon Fraser.


1:30 pm – This is from SirVincent Rogers on what kind of player the Riders are getting in G Evan Johnson. They were teammates for two years in Ottawa.

“Very stout player with a quiet grit about him. Quietly goes about his day to day work, and is tough as nails. At his core, he’s a fun loving kid who plays the game with the utmost integrity. We had really good chemistry as a LG and LT, which aided in the success of our run and pass game. Great man altogether!”


1:02 pm – Justin Dunk reports the Riders have signed Canadian DB Godfrey Onyeka.

Onyeka played two seasons in Edmonton, appearing in 27 regular season games. He’s been primarily a special teams player, racking up 13 special teams tackles and 5 tackles on defense.

He started five games at field cornerback for Edmonton in the 2019 season.

Godfrey is a cousin to current Riders LB Nakas Onyeka

1:00 pm – Riders announce the signing of OL Evan Johnson.

The release from the team says “for the 2021 season” implying it is a one-year contract.

11:01 am – Justin Dunk reports the Riders are signing middle linebacker Larry Dean.

Dean has played all 18 games in all four of his CFL seasons, split between Hamilton and Edmonton. He is a three-time division all star.

Dean would replace Solomon Elimimian in the middle of the Riders defence.

Dunk also reports the Riders have signed linebackers Jordan and Justin Herdman-Reed.

10:54 am – TSN’s Farhan Lalji says he expects the Riders to sign OL Evan Johnson.

Johnson is from Regina and played at the U of S. He’s played three seasons with the Redblacks, starting games at left guard, right guard and right tackle.

It’s a busy deal ahead for Riders GM Jeremy O’Day.

As soon as free agency opens at 11:00am the Riders will sign defensive tackle Micah Johnson, The Sports Cage has confirmed. It’s a move first reported by TSN’s Dave Naylor.

Johnson spent 2019 with the Riders before leaving for BC before the 2020 season.
