Tourism industry hoping Sask. residents get out of the house and travel within the province

Getting out of the house while not venturing far from home.

It is something that Saskatchewan’s battered tourism industry is hoping you consider this Family Day long weekend.

Many hotels in the province are staging some “Staycation” promotions for couples seeing it is Valentine’s Day weekend as well with others for the whole family.

It is an initiative that the president and CEO of Hospitality Saskatchewan applauds.

Jim Bence says the tourism industry is once again showing its resiliency.

“Any opportunity for them to bring in some revenue is something they are willing to do.” Bence said. “Everyone wants to support one another so if that involves a hotel doing something with a tourist attraction that allows you to see something you haven’t before whether it be in your city or another and you can do it safely, they are onboard.”

Bence says a staycation not only allows you to stop staring at the same four walls you have been for months because of the pandemic, but that going to a hotel and just relaxing for a weekend will be great for your mental health whether you take the whole family or just go away with your significant other to relax and de-stress.

While many hotels are offering some kind of package, there are also many outdoor activities you can take in this weekend if you are willing to brave the cold.   Bence says supporting these businesses now helps when they can continue to operate post-pandemic.
