A $2.2-million investment has been announced to turn canola and peas into high protein powder

Regina based Protein Industries Canada has announced a $2.2-million investment in research to expand the use of pulse and canola crops.

Protein Industries Canada CEO Bill Gruel says a partnership has been formed with two Ontario companies to turn pulse and canola crops into high protein food for use in hospitals and athletic consumers.

He says many current products come from whey and some people are looking for a plant-based alternative.

Gruel is hoping to see the creation of ready-to-mix protein powders within 18 to 24 months.
