Sask. exports increase in 2020, only province to do so

Saskatchewan exports to the world reached 30.4 billion dollars in 2020, up 2.5 percent from the previous year.

Saskatchewan Trade and Export Partnership president Chris Dekker says Saskatchewan was the only province in Canada to record an increase in exports.

He says farm products led the way with wheat up 15 percent, durum rising 32 percent and a 47 percent increase in canola.

“We were pleased with a substantive increase to China, we had an increase of about 33 percent to just over $4 billion in 2020,” said Dekker. “After that, Japan, India, and Brazil rounded off our top 5 international market destinations. It’s interesting to note that, out of all our key markets, China is the only economy that actually grew during 2020.”

On the downside, lower prices for oil and potash meant reduced export value for those commodities in 2020.

Dekker expects Saskatchewan exports will grow between 3 and 5 percent in 2021.
