Meadow Lake RCMP officer recounts intense snowmobile rescue

Two Meadow Lake RCMP officers went above and beyond to rescue two men lost in the woods.

Just after 7:00 pm on January 31st, Constable Sarah Carignan and her partner learned that a phone call had come in and dropped five times from a remote location south of Green Lake.

Carignan says even though her shift was technically over, she had a gut-feeling something was very wrong.

“We were able to get the location of that call, which when we looked up on GPS, it was putting it in the middle of the bush between Green Lake and Meadow Lake,” said Carignan. “With that we knew that something was wrong, and there was no way that it was normal that someone was calling from the middle of the bush.”

Despite the temperature being -18 and dropping, Carignan and her partner put on warm clothes, loaded up two snowmobiles, and headed into the woods.

She says they could feel the pressure mounting the deeper in the woods they got.

“When we got there and started going on the snowmobile, neither myself or my partner knew the area, or the family,” said Carignan. “So, we just started going, trying to find where they were with the pin we had on our phones.”

Along the way, the officers met with a local trapper named Mr. T, who helped guide them through the area.

They eventually found the two men, whose snowmobile had broke through the ice into waist-deep water at the bottom of a ravine, very cold and very wet.

Carignan says everyone was relieved to have reached the men in time.

“It was a great feeling, we all felt really, really good to find them,” said Carignan. “It was an event that could have gone completely wrong, and it ended up being great. They did not have any kind of injuries or anything like that, so it was a great feeling for us to see them okay, and for them to see us, they are safe now.”

Carignan says she’s happy that her and her partner followed their instincts in knowing something was wrong.

All in all, the rescue took 5 and a half hours
