Mike Babcock admits he is not perfect, but he won’t classify himself as a bully as one of his former players, Johan Franzen, has suggested.
Babcock, who is the new coach of the University of Saskatchewan men’s hockey team, spoke with Derek Taylor on Saskatchewan’s #1 sports show, the Sportscage, on Tuesday afternoon to talk about his new role and his past which came to light after he was let go as the head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
“I’m real proud of my coaching career, I’m real proud of the way I’ve treated people, how hard we have played and the fun we have had, “Babcock told Taylor. “Have I ever done anything I’d like to take back—-a hundred percent. We all evolve as people who try and get better each and every day. I don’t believe I have been a bully. Do I believe that I have tried to get you better. If you have good intentions, you do some things wrong sometime but that isn’t your intention. My intention is to make everyone the player they are capable of being. I want to create an environment that will allow people to grow.
As for coming back to Saskatoon, Babcock says he loves university hockey from his days at Red Deer College and the University of Lethbridge. When you add that to the fact that he is a Saskatchewan boy, he says they are proud to go home and excited to go home.
