Much of Southern Sask to receive below normal runoff this spring

The latest Water Security Agency runoff forecast shows below normal runoff along a band encompassing Regina, Swift Current and North Battleford.

Most of the far south including Assiniboia, Estevan and Weyburn are anticipated to receive well below normal runoff.

Conditions over southcentral and southeastern areas, particularly east of Highway 4 and south of the Trans-Canada, are particularly dry and have a snowmelt runoff potential.

While surface water supplies at larger reservoirs are expected to be met in 2021, small smaller reservoirs and dugouts may see shortages if snowpack conditions do not improve.

Low levels on recreational lakes may occur during the summer, particularly in the Qu’Appelle Valley.

Near normal runoff is forecast encompassing Saskatoon, Prince Albert, Melfort and La Ronge as well as pockets of the southwest, including Kindersley, Leader and Cypress Hills.

The Water Security Agency says ice on waterbodies also poses a risk during the melt period and should be avoided.

Weather can change the runoff forecast and a final runoff report will be released in early April.
