Saskatchewan leads the country in farm cash receipts

Saskatchewan surpassed Ontario in total farm cash receipts in 2020, due to higher crop sales and prices.

Statistics Canada reports Saskatchewan farm cash receipts at $16.6 billion or about $500 million more than Ontario.

Farm cash receipts were up 18 percent in Saskatchewan compared to the national rate of 8 percent. There were double digit increases year-over-year for canola, wheat, durum, barley and peas. However, the biggest rise occurred with lentils as 2020 sales generated $1.87 billion, well above the $867 million in 2019. The big difference was a temporary reduction in lentil tariffs by India that boosted sales. The vast majority of Canadian lentils are grown in Saskatchewan.

On the other side of the ledger, national cash receipts for cattle and calves were 5.2 percent lower. COVID challenges at processing plants and a decline in marketings to the United States were factors.
