CFL and Ottawa still talking on league getting financial assistance

Talks between the CFL and the federal government on financial assistance has continued as the league looks for a way to get back on the field.

A source close to the situation says the two sides have kept in touch since last August after plans to hold a shortened 2020 season were put on ice after the league could not get a $30-million interest-free loan from Ottawa.

While the season is scheduled to start in June with a full 18-game schedule, commissioner Randy Ambrosie has said the league is keeping all of its options open.

The league wants to play in 2021 with fans in the stands because it is a gate-driven league so delaying the start of the season would allow more COVID-19 vaccinations to be held across the country so that fans could once again attend games in larger numbers.

All teams have also submitted a return-to-play protocol before the respective provincial health authorities where teams are based out of.
