Project S.P.E.E.D. returns to Regina

Regina Police are bringing back Project SPEED (Spring Public Education & Enforcement Drive) this year.

The project will see members of the traffic safety unit carry out a number of enforcement and education actions in order to ensure Regina drivers are following the law behind the wheel.

Regina Police Cst. Greg Krawetz says there will be more enforcement on a variety of infractions, including vehicle noise.

“Some extra projects around street racing, some more night time projects — we’re going to be bringing in some extra officers at night to perform some more projects to try and crack down on the late-night speeding, the racing, doing doughnuts in parking lots, stuff like that.”

Cst. Krawetz says the project normally takes place in the spring.

“We see a large influx of complaints (in the spring),” Cst. Krawetz said. “A lot of these nicer vehicles that are being driven that are a little bit louder or that do the racing, they’re not driven in the winter so we don’t see them as much. They’re usually parked.

“Around this time of year every year is when the complaints start coming in, and we start to see this as more of an issue every year.”

While Project SPEED wraps up in May, Cst. Krawetz says they still do this enforcement year-round.

“We are always looking for speeding infractions, dangerous driving infractions, racing, vehicle equipment regulations — which would be like mufflers and exhaust — anything along those lines.”

Last year, over 1,500 tickets were issued as part of Project SPEED. Ironically, over two-thirds of them were for speeding.

Police also impounded 27 vehicles as part of the project.
