Saskatchewan drivers, cyclists and pedestrians were asked in April to submit their worst roads for CAA’s “Worst Road in the Province” campaign and many came through with a vote.
When all votes were tabulated, a section of Highway 4 near Dorintosh, north of Meadow Lake in the province’s northwest, was given the distinction of having the worst road.
Regina saw two streets and an area highway make the list. The streets are 8th Avenue North which was second, and Grant Drive which was 6th. Grant Drive also made the 2019 list when it placed 8th. There was no campaign in 2020 due to COVID-19. Highway 33 just outside of the city placed 7th.
CAA’s Christine Niemczyk says they are very appreciative all the votes received.
“We rely on our roads so much for commercial purposes and leisure ones. ” Niemczyk said. “It is important to hear from everyone who are commuting about what their worst road was and tell us about it.”
The top 10 went as follows:
- Highway 4, Dorintosh
- 8th Avenue North, Regina
- Highway 9, Hudson Bay (Placed #5 in 2018 CAA Worst Roads)
- 52nd Street East, Saskatoon
- Highway 340, Hafford
- Grant Drive, Regina (Placed No. 8 in 2019 CAA Worst Roads)
- Highway 33, Regina
- Highway 13, Shaunavon
- 20th Street West, Saskatoon
- 3-way tie: Highway 35, Weyburn; Highway 3, Hudson Bay; Highway 9, Canora
Niemczyk says all of the municipalities that made the list will be informed by CAA as will the Ministry of Highways. She says the purpose of the campaign Worst Roads campaign is to highlight problems and dangerous road conditions in the province and encourage decision makers to address those needing improvements.
