It didn’t matter if it was raining, windy or hot outside. Frank Atchison finished what he started two months ago and accomplished his goal of walking from Saskatoon to Regina on Tuesday afternoon.
Atchison set out for his journey from Saskatoon on April 15 to raise money for the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital in Saskatoon and the Shriner’s Hospital in Montreal. Every day, the Second World War veteran walked about five kilometres, meeting a number of people along the way, while receiving support and donations for his cause.
On Tuesday, a ribbon was stretched across the road in front of the Saskatchewan Legislative Building where he crossed the finish line and completed his journey.
“I was glad we took 61 days. It has been a great experience,” said Atchison. “If I can help a child, that’s what my walk was all about.”

What made the event even more memorable was that he finished the trek on his 95th birthday surrounded by family and friends – including his wife Martha Atchinson.
This year also marks 50 years of being a member of the Wa Wa Shriners for Atchison, which he was recognized for by fellow Shriners during his post-walk celebration on Tuesday. Atchison said he could not have completed his walk without help from his teammates.
“My committee, the workers, the volunteers. They have to get so much credit because they are working for nothing,” he added. “They probably had lots of other things to do with their time. They also gave donations.”
Atchison was also congratulated at the legislative building by a number of dignitaries including Premier Scott Moe and Regina Mayor Sandra Masters.
