The Saskatchewan Water Security Agency is encouraging rural municipalities and Conservation and Development Areas to take advantage of the largest channel clearing grant ever offered.

The province is offering up to 1.5 million dollars in 2021-22, part of the province’s two year 2 million dollar funding announcement in March.

The Water Security Agency says the program has been streamlined this year and removed barriers to simplify the application process.

Minister responsible Fred Bradshaw says the province is recognizing the impact from a blocked watercourse.

The channel clearing program assists RM’s, Conservation and Development and Watershed Associations to remove debris, silt, and beaver dams from natural watercourses to lessen the possibility of blockages that can flood roadways and farm land.

SARM president Ray Orb says keeping natural waterways clear helps farmers and protects rural infrastructure.

He welcomes the expanded funding this year.

Construction works for drainage or moving water are not eligible for the rebate.

The deadline to apply is January 31st, 2022.
