Regina-based Protein Industries Canada has reached a deal with two Ontario companies to spend 1.9 million dollars to develop a plant-based seafood line of products.
A director with Protein Industries Canada, Meghan Gervais, says the agreement will expand the use of Saskatchewan-grown crops.
“We have invested with New School Foods and Liven Proteins to develop a first faux-muscle plant-based fish filet,” said Gervais. “So. it’ll be a fish filet that emulates the same texture, taste, and cooking experience of fish, but it will be a fully plant-based product.”
The 1.9 million dollar investment will see half from Protein Industries Canada and the other half from New School Foods and Liven Proteins.
