SGI’s Traffic Safety Spotlight focuses on construction zones in July

Orange Zone speeding is SGI’s traffic safety focus for July.

Spokesman Tyler McMurchy says the message is simple: slow to 60 km/h in construction zones.

“Last year, we saw more than 1,500 convictions for speeding in work zones,” McMurchy said. “We want to remind folks that not only during July, you will see police pay extra attention to those work zones (and) there’s also photo speed enforcement that happens at highway construction zones as well.”

He says it you are nabbed doing 100 km/h in a 60 zone, you face a $1,000 zone.

McMurchy hopes the message to slow down will get through.

“Not only will police be there in person, there’ll be photo enforcement, but we really hope it doesn’t come to that,” McMurchy said. “We want people to just understand that’s somebody’s father, mother, brother or sister working in those construction zones. That’s their workplace.”

McMurchy says the highway hotline has information of construction zones, making route planning easier.
