USask researchers use high-tech to improve crop breeding

The University of Saskatchewan is using cutting edge technology to improve crop breeding.

Researchers at the Global Institute for Food Security along with researchers in Quebec are using laser synchrotron technology to image and watch live plants distribute key minerals to survive under nutrient stress conditions.

The goal is to develop more efficient plants with better nutrient update and distribution.

By determining how fast nutrients move under stress and which elements travel to which areas, the project can help plant breeders design plants that move and store nutrients more efficiently.

Researchers hope to extent the study into important crops like wheat and soybeans.
