33rd Annual Lumsden Duck Derby goes Monday, sold out for first time ever

It’s the biggest day of the year for the town of Lumsden tomorrow as the 33rd annual Duck Derby is held.

That event sees 25,000 rubber ducks dumped into the Qu’Appelle River as they race to the finish line with the owner of ducks that cross the finish line first winning prizes.

Chair Jamie Lees says Duck Derby Day which always goes on the Monday of the long weekend is an important one.

“It’s huge, it’s actually one of our main fundraisers for the rink itself, it’s been a long standing tradition that it was originally designed to build the rink, and now that the rink has been built, it’s just for maintenance and upkeep,” said Lees. “Our  rink is not funded by tax dollars, so it all comes from fundraising, sponsorship, and volunteerism, so it’s huge.”

Lees says this event has become bigger than they ever thought it would and has put Lumsden on the map.

“I don’t think that anybody thought that this would put our names on the map because of it,” said Lees. “But it’s an event that people know us for, and know Lumsden for.”

The grand prize is one million dollars with many other prizes being awarded as well.

The duck drop goes at 2:30 with events happening throughout the day starting with a breakfast that starts at 8.
