Sask. crops sustain extensive hail damage in last week of August

The final week of August saw extensive hail damage across Saskatchewan.

The CEO of Saskatchewan Municipal Hail Insurance, Rodney Schoettler, says over one million acres of crop sustained hail damage in the last week of August.

Schoettler says the hail storms in late August affected a wide area ranging from Assiniboia to Yorkton and Kindersley.

He says strong winds and hail as big as golf balls caused 100 percent losses in many areas.

Schoettler says payouts are up about 60 percent per claim, with claim numbers about average.

He expects hail claim payouts to exceed the premiums of $101-million by five to ten percent.
