Pats fall to ICE 4-2 at home

The Regina Pats dropped their fourth game in a row last night to the Winnipeg ICE, 4-2.

Assistant Coach Brad Herauf says while they didn’t like the result, they liked the effort overall in this game.

“We’re playing really well, we’re playing our brand of hockey,” Herauf said. “We hit three or four posts, Connor (Bedard) had a couple of good chances in the third period, and that was against probably the best team in our league right now that we’ve seen.”

Chase Bertholet opened the scoring for the Winnipeg ICE 2:37 into the first period, with assists from Nalan Orzeck and Sequoia Swan. Mikey Milne added to the lead at the 6:49 mark of the first period, giving the ICE a 2-0 lead.

“We made some mistakes in the first five minutes there that kind of cost us, but we really established our game in the last 10 minutes of that period, and I think it carried on in the second and third period,” Herauf added.

Borya Valis then scored his first career WHL goal for the Pats, with assists from Luke Bateman and Jakob Brook. After one period, the Pats trailed 2-1.

Cole Carrier then scored the game-tying goal late in the second period, with assists from Cole Dubinsky and Layton Feist.

However, Skyler Bruce scored the eventual game winner for the ICE with a power play goal at the 2:49 mark into the third period. Owen Pederson scored an empty net goal to seal the win with under a minute to go.

While the offence produced two goals at even strength, they were unable to score on the power play, going 0/5 on the night. Herauf says consistency will be key moving forward.

“We just have a bad mixture right now,” Herauf said. “We could score on the power play and not scoring five-on-five, tonight (Friday) we scored five-on-five and not on the power play. We’re getting better all of the time, you like the way we’re playing, we just got to keep on playing that way.”

The Pats are back in action tonight as they visit Winnipeg for the second half of a home-and-home. Puck drop is 7:00, our pre-game is at 6:35 on 620 CKRM.
