COVID-19 case numbers are still trending downward across Canada.

Chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam says vaccines are helping with those numbers, but adds there’s evidence people may need a 3rd dose.

“These populations include adults ages 70-79 years, people who received two doses of the AstraZeneca (vaccine) or one dose of the Jansen COVID-19 vaccine.”

Dr. Tam says that includes people in certain targeted groups.

“Adults in or from First Nations, Inuit, and Metis communities where infection can have disproportionate consequences,” Dr. Tam said. “Adults who are front-line health care workers who have direct in-person contact with patients, and for whom the interval between doses of their primary COVID-19 vaccine series was less than 28 days.”

There are still 5.5 million people who are eligible for the vaccine in Canada who have not yet received a first dose.

However, Tam says a 3rd dose is not required to be fully vaccinated. That said, she added they will continue monitoring the progress of the virus to see if that changes.
