Late payments from Cargill reported from prairie producers

Challenges with a new computer system at Cargill is causing some issues with late payments for producer grain deliveries.

The Canadian Grain Commission has received 23 formal complaints over the last few weeks, including another three Monday.

Grain Commission spokesman Remi Gosselin says they come from all three Prairie provinces.

“As far as we know, this is throughout western Canada, so Manitoba, Alberta and Saskatchewan, producers in those areas are experiencing the same types of delay with slow payments,” Gosselin said. “It’s got more to do with the software that they’ve been using and have experienced some significant challenges.”

Gosselin says lengthy payment delays create financial stress for producers.

“Obviously, this is a frustrating situation for producers,” Gosselin said. “The Grain Commission has requested a follow-up meeting with Cargill to get to the bottom of these latest issues. Obviously we want to get producers paid as soon as possible.”

Gosselin says nearly all of the formal complaints have been resolved and farmers have received their payments.
