A blast of snow is on the way for Saskatchewan this week.

Some areas of the province could see up to 30 centimeters of snow before the system clears out late Wednesday.

While special weather statements are in place for southern Saskatchewan, winter storm watches and warnings are also in effect for some areas of northern Saskatchewan.

However, Environment Canada meteorologist Dave Carlsen says the big story in southern Saskatchewan is going to be the wind.

“Especially (Monday night) and (Tuesday), we’re looking at winds — pretty much anywhere south of a line from Kindersley to Regina — anywhere south of there you can probably be looking at wind gusts to 90 km/h or more (Tuesday) through the day-time especially.”

Winds will calm down tomorrow night, but not before possibly reaching up to 100 kilometers per hour in the southwest.

Carlsen says more snow is expected to fall further north in the province.

“That line goes from about Lloydminster to Prince Albert, anywhere north of that line, there’s going to be quite a lot of snow,” Carlsen said. “We’re looking at maybe 25-35 centimeters in Meadow Lake, and then maybe 15-25 in Prince Albert, but just south of there in Saskatoon, we’re forecasting a lot less, maybe a few centimeters at most.”

When it comes to the fog that currently lingers in the Regina area, Carlsen says it won’t last long.

“The fog should dissipate somewhere around noon, late (Monday) morning, or around noon,” Carlsen said. “The winds will pick up a little bit, and that should help mix the fog out through the atmosphere.”

Snow is expected to fall until Wednesday, with the temperatures hovering just below zero for the rest of the week.
