SaskEnergy says for the fifth time in the last two weeks a new energy consumption record has been set in the province thanks to the extreme cold.

On Thursday an estimated 1.66 petajoules was used, beating the previous record that was set December 29th.

SaskEnergy measures daily natural gas consumption for the 24-hour period from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.

A PJ is a unit of measurement equivalent to one million gigajoules (GJ) of natural gas.

An average Saskatchewan home consumes about 100 gigajoules of natural gas each year.

SaskEnergy says even during extreme cold, it is still possible to save energy by doing things like lowering the temperature in your house at night and when you’re not at home.
