Sask crop research to receive over 9 million dollar boost this year

Crop research in Saskatchewan is getting a major boost.

Agriculture minister David Marit has announced 9.1 million dollars in federal-provincial funding will go to crop research this year.

Marit says the funds will go to 55 crop-related research projects in such areas as studying the effect of intercropping on disease levels in various pulse crops and researching ways to mitigate root rot in peas.

He says other projects look at removing undesirable characteristics of protein ingredients from canola, hemp and flaxseed.

Marit adds an additional 4.1 million dollars will come from nine farm related groups for crop research in 2022.
