Russia-Ukraine tensions push up wheat prices

Political tensions between Russia and Ukraine is spilling over into the grain markets.

SaskWheat analyst Marlene Boersch of Mercantile Consulting says concerns about supply disruptions from Russia and Ukraine prompted some price hikes.

Both are major wheat exporters.

She says the main question the markets are asking, “will this be Putin’s final objective, and how will the Western Alliance react?”

So far, wheat price rises this week have been modest, in the six to eight dollar a ton range.
