Fighting continued in Ukraine overnight and Saturday but the capital city of Kyiv hasn’t been overtaken, according to Ukrainian military sources.
Invading Russian forces have been moving towards the capital city in the third day of hostilities. A residential building in Kyiv was hit by a munition but officials said there were no casualties as the building was being evacuated.
Overall, 198 Ukrainains have been killed, including three children, and 1,115 people have been wounded so far according to the latest numbers from the Ukrainian health ministry.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy posted a video on social media saying Ukraine will not lay down its weapons and he will not leave the capital.
Elsewhere in Ukraine, air raid sirens were heard in multiple cities like Odessa and Lviv, with fighting in several other areas of the country.
Western leaders, including Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, have condemned the Russian invasion and have targeted the financial accounts of Russian president Vladimir Putin and his foreign minister.
The United Nations says about 120,000 Ukrainians have left the country, with most heading to the neighbouring countries of Poland and Moldova.
