The spring runoff report has been released by the Water Security Agency, and it appears there will be drier conditions than normal for southern Saskatchewan, while northern Saskatchewan could be forced to deal with above than normal levels.

The hot and dry conditions throughout 2021 caused most areas of the province to enter winter below normal moisture conditions and even the snowfall this winter, most areas remain below normal moisture levels.

Southern Saskatchewan is expected to have a below or a well below normal snow melt this upcoming spring. Only areas east of Moose Jaw might be above normal runoff levels in the southern section of the province.

There is more concern up north, with a snowpack building within North Saskatchewan River Basin. There is concern the breakup of ice could lead to elevated levels for the river similar to those in 2020.

Despite the snowpack, the agency is confident the flows of the Saskatchewan River system and levels at Lake Diefenbaker will be better than the 2021 levels.
