Saskatchewan municipal police services, RCMP, and the Ministry of Environment launched their 2022 Firearm Amnesty Program.

The program, which will run until April 10, encourages residents in Saskatchewan to contact their municipal police service, nearest RCMP detachment, or conservation office to arrange to surrender their unwanted firearms, replica firearms and ammunition.

Elizabeth Popowich, the manager of public information and strategic community for the Regina Police Service, reminds residents to phone their local police detachment to have their unwanted firearms picked up.

“Do not bring firearms to your police station or to your local RCMP detachment if you are out of the City; just call,” she said. “I like to say it’s like reverse pizza deliveries, you call us and come to you, and we pick up any unwanted firearms.”

Popowich, it’s been a couple of years since they last held an amnesty.

“The last time we did this, I believe it was in 2019, and that year the total for the province was 283 firearms collected, and various types of firearms and types of ammunition.”

The Firearm Amnesty is designed to lower the risk of violent offences involving firearms by safely collecting and disposing of unwanted firearms that may otherwise fall into the hands of criminals through residential break-ins or accidental loss.

Reducing the number of these firearms in our cities, towns, and rural communities will positively impact public safety.
