According to a report from the Winnipeg Free Press, David Milgaard has reportedly died in a Calgary hospital after a short illness. He was 69. His cause of death is unknown.
Milgaard was convicted of the 1969 rape and murder of nursing aide Gail Miller in Saskatoon and spent nearly 23 years in prison for those crimes
In 1999 he received $10 million from the federal government for the wrongful conviction, which was the largest criminal compensation package in Canadian legal history.
The Saskatchewan government declined to retry Milgaard after the Supreme Court of Canada ordered a new trial. IN 1997, DNA evidence cleared Milgaard.
His mother Joyce Milgaard advocated tirelessly for David’s release and then after that, worked with many others to have their convictions overturned. She died in 2020 at age 89.
