Fertilizer production at Bethune mine projected to double in coming years

Fertilizer production at the Bethune potash mine is projected to double over the next couple decades.

K plus S Group has released a global strategy for the relatively new Bethune mine northwest of Regina.

The final production capacity is intended to grow continuously over the next few couple decades, and is currently targeted toward four million metric tons per year, effectively doubling the current production output.

The company is undertaking a feasibility stage, mapping out the future milestones of growth and timelines for supporting projects.

Chief operating officer Holger Riemensperger says optimizing business at the Bethune mine enhances the strong position of the company as an internationally-oriented producer of minerals critical to agriculture and other industries.

He adds the Bethune mine is looking at safely and sustainably growing profitability while also reducing environmental impact and building a more inclusive workforce.

He says the company is looking at hiring more than one hundred additional employees in areas like engineering, IT, operations, trade and supporting roles.

The company employs over 400 people at the Bethune mine and Saskatoon and Port Moody B.C. offices.
