For the first time in Canada’s modern era, a Canadian monarch will celebrate a platinum jubilee.

Queen Elizabeth II is celebrating 70 years since being ascending to the throne.

Royal fans and the Government House will also be celebrating the milestone.

At Government House, they have put flags and banners up, and Queen’s Jubilee Garden, which will be ready in a couple of weeks. The house also was able to get a loan on a Queen’s portrait and will be hosting an interactive exhibit about the Queen’s connection to Saskatchewan.

Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan Russ Mirasty said that being on the throne for 70 years is an amazing accomplishment and should be celebrated.

He said that the Queen is an important figure in Government and for residents across the nation.

“Regardless of what we may think as individuals in terms of its current role, the Queen is still our head of state. She is and continues to be an integral part of how Government functions, not only federally but provincially as well,” he said. “It’s a really critical position that she holds within our form of Government. It’s very important for people to recognize that.”

The Government of Saskatchewan is celebrating the milestone by creating the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal, which will honour significant contributions and achievements throughout Saskatchewan during this unprecedented anniversary year. Between June and February 2023, 7,000 medals will be awarded.
