Extreme heat making a weekend stop in Regina

Summer does not officially begin until next week, but it will feel like it this weekend.

The current forecast for Saturday shows a high of +32.

Environment Canada’s Terri Lang says a weather front will be moving in from the United States that will bring the heat beginning on Friday. “We’ll have a ridge of high pressure in the upper atmosphere and what that does it brings in the really warm temperatures up from the United States, so we are expecting temperatures to get in the low 30s.”

The heat is expected to have a short stay in Regina over the weekend with cooler temperatures expected for the beginning of next week. Lang pointed out with an extended winter and a wet spring, it might be a good thing for the extreme heat to be short term in our area. “We’re not quite climatized to the heat yet, just because it’s earlier in the season, even though it’s not an unusual pattern, its just a cool spring into summer so far.”

With temperatures in the low 30s throughout the weekend, Lang recommends that everyone practice some important safety tips to beat the heat. Some of these tips include finding some shade when outside, staying indoors during peak warm hours, and staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water.

There is a possibility of some thunderstorms this weekend, but rain is expected to move into southern Saskatchewan at the beginning of next week.
