McCallum, Shivers and Suitor get the call from the Hall

Former Saskatchewan Roughriders Paul McCallum, Roy Shivers and Glenn Suitor will be inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame this fall.

McCallum will be inducted as a player, Shivers as a builder, and Suitor will be inducted in the media wing.

McCallum is one of the best kickers and punters in the history of the CFL. He played 24 seasons with the Riders, BC Lions and Ottawa Rough Riders. He sits second on the all-time scoring list with 3,145 points. He still owns the record for the longest (62 yards) field goal in league history.

Needless to say, he’s humbled by the honour. “It’s one of those things I never really thought of when I was playing,” McCallum tells 620 CKRM. “But now that it’s happened, it’s pretty awesome. It’s very special, and it’s slowly setting in.”

Shivers enjoyed a successful 32-year career in the CFL, including six seasons as the general manager of the Riders (2000-2006). Shivers is a four-time Grey Cup winner; twice with BC (1985 and 2011) and another two with Calgary (1992, 1998).

After a successful 11-season playing career as a Saskatchewan Roughrider safety, Glen Suitor retired as a player in 1995 and joined TSN as an analyst for its televised CFL games. A four-time nominee, he won a Canadian Screen Award in 2014 for his work on the 100th Grey Cup. The Vancouver product is a frequent guest commentator on football programs, including on 620 CKRM’s SportsCage.

Suitor and McCallum will both be guests on today’s SportsCage with Michael Ball.

Also going into the Hall’s media wing is Ed Willes, who worked in the sports department at the Regina Leader-Post from 1986-89.

The members of the Class of 2022 will be officially inducted September 16 at Tim Hortons Field in Hamilton.
