Its a tremendous honour, for some incredible curlers.
It was announced today Team Schmirler will be inducted into the World Curling Federation Hall of Fame. Skip Sandra Schmirler was posthumously inducted into the hall in 2009.
Her teammates Jan Betker, Joan McCusker and Marcia Gudereit will now join her.
Team Schmirler won the World Championship three times in the 1990’s. They won their first world championship in 1993 in Geneva, Switzerland. They then defended their title in 1994 in Oberstdorf, Germany. Their third world title came in 1997 in Bern, Switzerland when they defeated Norway’s Dordi Nordby in the Gold Medal final.
Team Schmirler then made history by winning the first ever women’s Olympic gold medals at the Nagano 1998 Olympic Winter Games. They would finish the Olympic Games with an 8-1 win-loss record, defeating Denmark in the Gold Medal final.
The team were inducted into the Canadian Curling Hall of Fame in 1999.
