Up and down season for Red Sox as they near the midway mark

Just short of the halfway point of the 2022 season, the Regina Red Sox have seen a bit of everything so far this year.

Regina is sitting in third spot of the Eastern Division of the WCBL with a 11-13 record which is unusual territory for the squad according to President Gary Brotzel, but he also noted the a lot that has to do with their competition. ” There is a ton of parity in our division and in the league overall, it seems like anybody can beat anybody on any given night.”

Baseball fans across the prairies have been able to witness a variety of entertaining games this season. Some games have been high scoring affairs,  while others have been low scoring pitchers duel. Brotzel points out that it has been a roller coaster season for the Red Sox. “We’ve had some outstanding starting pitching performances and then the next night it’s like we can’t get out of the second or third inning.”

Brotzel is hopeful the Red Sox will be able to maintain some consistency as they head into July, especially with the bats. The Regina bats were able to come alive in the Red Sox recent victory against Moose Jaw on Sunday and the Red Sox President is hopeful that the latest win is a sign of things to come for Regina.

This upcoming week is an important stretch for the Red Sox as they play four games in four days beginning on Tuesday night when they visit the Weyburn Beavers. The Red Sox return home on Wednesday as they kick off a three game homestand that will see Regina meet the Swift Current 57’s. On Thursday, the Red Sox will host the Moose Miller Express and to wrap up the homestand, the Red Sox will take on the Beavers in special Canada Day game with an opening pitch at 1:00.

The matinee Canada Day game is something Brotzel looking forward to. “We’ve been in the league since 2005 and I don’t believe we’ve ever played on Canada Day, this will be a first for us.”

Coming up in July, the Red Sox will be giving back to the community as they will holding their annual youth baseball camps on July 13 & 14 at Currie Field with instruction provided by the coaching staff and players from the Red Sox. More information for the camps can be found at https://www.reginaredsox.com/community/youth-ball-camp/

A big fundraiser the Red Sox will be holding throughout the summer is their “Big Apple Raffle” The grand prize of the raffle is a trip to New York from August 19-23. Also included in the prize package are tickets to see the New York Yankees meet the Toronto Blue Jays on August 20, a chance to see the Lion King performance on Broadway on August and tickets to see the New York Yankees take on the New York Mets on August 22 along with $2000 USD. The draw date for the raffle is July 27, 8:30 at Currie Field.

Fundraisers like the Big Apple Raffle are vital for the long term success for the Red Sox organization says Brotzel. “I’d like to be able to fund the whole program by putting bums in the seats but so far that hasn’t been a reality so we rely on a couple of fundraisers to top off are efforts and that’s one of them long with our sports dinner, so we’re hoping everyone will support it.”
