Regina Hungarian Club celebrates 100 years

The Regina Hungarian Club is celebrating 100 years.

They are celebrating the 100th anniversary this September long weekend with a flag raising at city hall, a pub crawl and karaoke evening at the club, dinner and anniversary celebration, and it all wraps up on Sunday with a lunch buffet and Rider game tailgate BBQ.

Maggie Gilmore, a planning committee member for the 100th-anniversary celebration, said that the club had played a big role in the history of Regina.

“I think it’s very significant to people both of Hungarian background and non-Hungarian background,” she said. “It’s been a gathering point for the last 100 years for those that come from Hungary or have Hungarian roots, and it’s also been a place where people have been able to celebrate their weddings, anniversaries, and major milestones in their lives.”

Gilmore, who has been a part of the club since the 1980s, said she feels a lot of pride seeing the club hit the 100 milestones.

“I am feeling immense pride,” she said. “It’s amazing that this club has been able to withstand two world wards, all the changes that we’ve seen over the decades, COVID, everything. We are pretty proud of our organization, and we are proud to share it with everyone.”

Gilmore said that going forward, she hopes the club will continue to expand.

“We are hoping to grow our membership and move forward into the future, still maintaining our Hungarian culture and heritage and introducing people to our heritage and sharing in that. Hopefully, we’ll see Mosaic continue with that.”
