Battle of Prairies heats up for Labour Day Classic

The prairie edition of the Labour Day Weekend in the CFL goes Sunday when the Saskatchewan Roughriders host the Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Mosaic Stadium in Regina.

Gametime weather will likely reflect the onfield rivalry, with a possible heat warning to last throughout Sunday in the Queen City, with temperatures expected at gametime to be around gametime.

Saskatchewan and Winnipeg will become well acquainted with each other in September, as the two western teams will square off three times over the next month.

Playoffs are on the minds of the Bombers this week, with a victory over the Riders, the Bombers would clinch a spot in the CFL postseason. The blue and gold are currently 10-1 and are top of the CFL’s Western Division heading into Sunday’s game.

Meanwhile in Riderville, after a victory in BC, the green and white are looking to build some momentum with the playoff stretch looming. The Riders begin this afternoon’s contest in fourth spot with a 6-5 record.

Brayden Lenius, Shaq Evans, and Mitch Picton will return to the starting lineup for the Saskatchewan Roughriders today. This will be the first game for Lenius in 2022 as a Rider after he released by the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons in July.

Evans returns after being sidelined with an injury he suffered back in Week 3 against Montreal.

As for Picton, he’s been out with an ankle injury that occured on July 8 against Ottawa.

Duke Williams  and Justin McInnis are both out for another week.

Changes continue on the offensive line for Saskatchewan. Josiah St. John will start at right tackle in place of Jamal Campbell. At left tackle, Andrew Lauderdale will start despite Terran Vaughn practicing throughout the week in the starter’s spot.

For the second week in a row, the defence of the green and white will remain in tact with the exception of Anthony Lanier. They will be will led by the linebacking duo of Larry Dean and Darnell Sankey, who rank second and third respectively in the league for tackles. Dean with 68, Sankey has 63.

Despite being away from team facilities throughout the week due to COVID protocols, Craig Dickenson is expected to be on the sidelines as Head Coach for the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Today’s Labour Day Classic will be played before a full capcity crowd at Mosaic Stadium with 33,350 football fans mixed a color combination of green and white and blue and gold.
