Sask harvest reaches 64 percent

Saskatchewan farmers made speedy harvest progress this past week.

Provincial crops specialist Matt Struthers says 64 percent of the crop is in the bin, up from 42 percent last week and just ahead of the 5 year average of 57 percent.

He says harvest ranges from 93 percent in the southwest to 41 percent in the northeast.

Most of the crop is reflecting good quality, with 80 percent of durum in the top two grades.

Topsoil moisture is rated one percent surplus, 37 percent adequate, 38 percent short and 24 percent very short.

The majority of crop damage this week was due to light hail, wind and dry conditions.

Frost was reported from the southeast to the northwest and possible damage has not been assessed yet.

There are also reports of damage caused by wildlife and migrating waterfowl.
