Rams look to put some distance between them and Alberta for second spot

It could be a possible playoff preview on Saturday afternoon as the University of Regina Rams host the University of Alberta Golden Bears.

Heading into today’s action, the Rams (3-1) are in second place of the Canada West Football standings, with Alberta (2-2) in third.

Ram head coach, Mark McConkey was a guest of the SportsCage with Michael Ball earlier this week, and he pointed out the performance of running back Olivier Savard who rushed for 100 yards in the Rams over UBC on September 23, despite starting the season as the team’s third string running back.

“He stepped up, didn’t miss a beat, which is exciting, Coach Dwayne Mason has done a great job with those guys. ”

With the Rams sitting second heading into October, the Rams head coach says the preseason rankings which had the Regina ranked as sixth has provided a source of motivation for his team this season.

“We post in our group chat every week.”

He added last week’s win in Vancouver was tough considering the travelling circumstances.

“We did same day travel, we actually took a chartered plane, flew out the morning of, went to a golf course and are a nice meal, walked up to the stadium, plenty early, went out won the game and flew home afterwards, we treated it like a business trip.”

First year quarterback Noah Pelletier has settled into the starting position according to his head coach, as he has been playing like a veteran.

“He’s confident, he’s got a little swag to him, for a first year guy to have that is pretty cool.” McConkey added Pelletier has done a good job of managing the ball and running the Rams offence in his first under the helm.

This week, the Rams head coach believes that Pelletier has to read what the defence is giving him and to make the proper reads.

This afternoon’s game can be heard on 620 CKRM, with the pregame show at 1:45, and the opening kickoff at 2:00.
