Sask harvest reaches 90 percent complete

Saskatchewan farmers made good harvest progress this past week.

Provincial crops extension specialist Matt Struthers says 90 percent of the crop has been combined, up from 81 percent and well ahead of the five year average of 82 percent.

He says some producers must dry down their grain in order to store it properly because of high humidity in many parts of eastern Saskatchewan.

Harvest ranges from virtually complete in the southwest to 81 percent in east central Saskatchewan.

There was little rain this week.

Cropland topsoil moisture is rated 28 percent adequate, 41 percent short and 31 percent very short.

Crop quality remains high with 98 percent of spring wheat falling in the top two grades.

The majority of crop damage this week was due to wind, waterfowl and wildlife.

Wind continues to blow swaths around as well as shelling out crops and causing lodging.
