Investigation underway after man shot by police

The Saskatoon Police Service and the Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team are heading the investigation into a police involved shooting early Saturday morning near Cut Knife.

Between midnight and 1:30 am police had three separate reports of an incident involving a man from the Little Pine First Nation who was pointing a fire arm at Little Pine Security members, an assault, and the report of a suicidal person, who had called 9-1-1.

Just before 2:00 am two RCMP officers encountered the 49 year-old man outside a home on the Little Pine First Nation, and at least one of the officers fired a weapon.

Police gave the man medical treatment until EMS arrived to take him to hospital.  After a few hours of treatment, the man was released from hospital, and into the custody of the RCMP.  No one else was hurt, and police did recover a gun from the scene.

Under the RCMP act, an independent investigation from an outside police agency is launched in these.  As per protocol, the RCMP have asked the Ministry of Justice to provide an independent observer, including one indigenous observer to keep tabs on the investigation.
