Any chance of the Saskatchewan Roughriders (6-10) advancing to the postseason are on the line today when they host the Calgary Stampeders at Mosaic Stadium.
Hamilton defeated Ottawa 30-27 last night to finish the REDBLACKS playoff chances and to put the green and white on the brink of elimination.
In a move that Roughriders head coach Craig Dickenson hopes will provide a spark to the team, Saskatchewan will make a switch at quarterback today. Mason Fine will make his first start with the Roughriders as Cody Fajardo will be relegated to backup status. Dickenson didn’t rule out the possibility of Fajardo getting some action on the field at some point.
Fine has appeared in four games with the Riders in 2022, his most extensive action was against BC back on August 19, when he went 16/26 with 210 yards passing with a touchdown and an interception.
Along with the change at quarterback, the Roughriders will receive a boost at running back with the return of Jamal Morrow from a fracture hand injury. Morrow was the league’s leading rusher before being sidelined with the injury. Since Frankie Hickson has been out of the Riders lineup with an injury of his own, they have averaged 46 yards over the last two weeks, including accumulating 29 yards against Hamilton in their last game.
A couple of key Rider players who remain on the sidelines are receiver Duke Williams, and defensive tackle Anthony Lanier.
The Calgary Stampeders have very little to play for over the next two weeks following the BC Lions defeating Edmonton 31-14 to clinch second place in the Western Division. The Lions will host the Stampeders in the Western Semi-Finals.
620 CKRM will have full coverage of today’s matchup featuring the Roughriders and the Stampeders. It begins with Countdown to Kickoff at 2:00, the opening kickoff with Michael Ball and Luc Mullinder is 5:00.
