5A High School Football Finals tonight, 6A Semi-finals tomorrow

The playoff stretch drive is heating up in Regina’s high school football this week, with the 5A Finals set to take place tonight.

The 6A semi-finals are for tomorrow night.

Earlier this week, Aaron Anderson, the Commissioner of Athletics of RHSAA joined Michael Ball to preview this week’s playoff matchups.

The 5A Championship final will see the  Sheldon Williams Spartans vs Balgonie Greenall Griffins,  in a rematch of last year’s 5A city championship.

The Spartans were able to advance with 5-0 win against the F. Johnson Wildcats. Anderson says the 5-0 score was very deceiving.

“There were a lot of good plays on both sides of the ball and both teams had opportunities to score, they just couldn’t punch it in, gambling on third downs, turning over the ball in each other’s territory a few times, there was a missed field goal, so there were points left on the field.”

The two semi-finals that will go on Friday will see the Miller Marauders taking on the Winston Knoll Cougars at 5:15.

Miller will enter the matchup as the favourites, but with a one game situation, anything could happen, and Anderson says that is the best part of the playoffs.

“These things are never played in paper, they’re never played in the media, you just don’t know, will it be a tall order, absolutely, Knoll will have to play their absolute best game.”

Anderson added that Knoll will likely have to take advantage of the Marauders two week layoff.

The other semi-finals will have the Leboldus Golden Suns squaring off with the Riffel Royals.

Anderson says this game could be the best of the week in Regina, with Leboldus preferring to use the ground game, while Riffel likes to use an aerial attack. He added there could be a lot of points on the board.

“If you’re looking for an over/under, you’re probably talking 50 points.”

The finals for the 6A championship is next Friday at Mosaic Stadium with a 6:00 kickoff.
