Snow, Freezing Rain part of Weather Warnings in Saskatchewan

Some nasty weather is coming to Saskatchewan, and you will want to know this if you are headed out on the highways.

Snowfall warnings are up for western Saskatchewan from Leader and Gull Lake north to the Meadow Lake Area. As well as from Prince Albert east to the Alberta Border. Some low pressure is coming up from Montana, bringing freezing rain and snow.

“It’s mostly hitting west-central Saskatchewan, the north-west grain belt, and through the Parkland areas, all the way up as probably as far north as La Ronge. Those are the areas that are hardest hit,” says Terri Lang, Meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada.

The storm is expected to intensify through the day.

Some of the areas mentioned could see as much as 30 cm or a foot of heavy, wet snow.

“To the south of that system, there’s likely to be some bands of freezing rain as well because of the warm temperatures that are around but the ground is still cold,” says Lang.

In Regina, there are no warnings, and the weather office is still calling for a mostly sunny day and a high of 10 degrees.

In and around the areas of the storm, driving conditions are likely to deteriorate as the storm pushes through.

Although the winds will only be blowing up to 60 km an hour, Lang predicts that there will be reduced visibility on the roads as well as snowy and icy driving conditions.

“Drivers should be aware of that. If anyone is heading to the north-west, the north, or the north-east, make sure to check the Highway Hotline before heading out and be prepared for winter driving conditions,” says Lang,
